NOT A TYPO: Recruiting for Summer 2019 in some industries will start AS EARLY AS SUMMER 2018

Some competitive companies, such as Amazon, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, ETC. are opening Summer 2019 applications as early as May, June or July 2018. That’s not a typo.  In order to recruit the best talent, some companies are opening their applications one full year before the start of the internship/job. While applications will likely stay open through September/October, it is in your best interest to apply early as many of these deadlines are rolling (meaning companies review applications as they come in). If you are targeting large, competitive, and well-known companies in finance, consulting, and even technology—read on!

The good news? Hoffman Family Undergraduate Center for Career Development created a checklist to keep you on task this summer. Each month, you will receive an email update from CCD with more information on what you should focus on that month in order to land those interviews.

This month, it’s all about the resume. While you are still on campus, take advantage of CCD advisers and schedule an appointment to meet with a Career Adviser or Peer Career Ambassador. Your resume should be in “ready to submit” shape before you leave campus. Remember you have ONE PAGE to tell your story, so make it count! This includes updating relevant coursework, and adding Education Abroad, campus clubs and organizations, and new technologies learned. Make sure to add your Summer 2018 plans to your resume now and add to it as you progress throughout the summer. Your resume should be easy to read, one page, and perfectly polished with consistent formatting, and no grammatical errors or typos. Your bullet points should be focused on your accomplishments, rather than a list of tasks completed. Check Career Beam for examples of strong accomplishment-oriented bullet points and other guidelines.

In May, we’ll give tips for getting organized: conducting research on companies and identifying positions of best fit for your skills and interests. Stay tuned!
