Down in the Gulf: Southern Hospitality at its Best

Hi Babson folks! We had a successful first day here in Biloxi and are back at the New Christian Church (the Habitat camp that will be our home for our time here in Mississippi). We worked alongside AmeriCorps and will continue to work with them for the remainder of the week. We are working on restoring and rebuilding a home built in the 1960’s. My group worked on stripping tar paper off of the exterior of the house; we took out the old windows and fixed the window frames as we will be putting in new windows tomorrow. The other groups worked on putting up support beams in both the roof and under the house (this is a standard practice for protection against hurricanes). The best part of the day was working alongside a Habitat partner family; partner families must complete 200 hours of work on homes for other families which is in my opinion a significant aspect of the organization and goes off of the notion of those who give shall receive. The New Christian Church has been great; after a long rewarding day, we came back to a home-cooked pot roast dinner. (I helped with preparing the veggies last night and they turned out splendid if I do say so myself!) I would love to stay and blog, but the peach cobbler just came out of the oven and is calling my name 🙂 Take care ya’ll and enjoy the snow!
