More than Business at Babson

Babson strongly enforces its curriculum of fifty percent business courses and fifty percent liberal arts courses, and I can certainly attest to this. Just last Monday in my Poetry class, we did an interesting activity I would like to share. Each student writes on average, one poem a week. We are assigned a specific format, theme or style to try, however the subject matter is determined by the student. I brought in my poem to class, and my professor passed out scissors and tape. The next step was to cut our poem into stanzas and swap with someone else in the room. We had to add that stanza to our poem. Following this, we took the title from our peer who was sitting two seats to the left. Then, we were instructed to write our own, new stanza within three minutes. Yes, my professor timed us! Finally, we rearranged the lines and taped our new title, new adopted stanza, and new written stanza to our original poem. As we read our poems aloud, we were all laughing at the various stories and narrative that emerged.

To elaborate more, our class also has a school-wide, two-day, public poetry reading next week. We are responsible for designating who reads on which day, the order, and the refreshments served. Honestly, I arrived at Babson my freshman year scared of public speaking and not the most lyrical, creative writer. Now I am going to be sharing meaningful pieces to my own peers. Furthermore, I will be doing an independent study project in the spring that involves writing a collection of poems about the women I will be observing an interacting with while in Ghana over winter break. My personal experiences have proved that “it is possible at Babson.”
