Three Weeks In!!

Hi everybody!

We are now officially halfway through the third week back at school and I am happy to report that it is as busy and fun as ever! For those of you who don’t yet know me, my name is Lauryn Sherman and I’m a senior from San Diego, California. I’m working in the admissions office this year after having spent this past year studying abroad in Tanzania, India, New Zealand and Mexico. Spending nine months outside of the country and returning to school has brought me many joys and challenges.

The most exciting thing about being back on campus has been, of course, seeing the students, faculty, and staff again. Last week, I was able to catch up with a lot of the people whom I missed while I was away, and was very excited to see a couple of my favorite professors again. It’s nice to be back in the one place that feels like my second home, and I haven’t forgotten that feeling of walking across campus and hearing so many people say hello! Coming back to live in the towers again feels good, but a bit strange since there are so many new faces, however, we have been doing a lot of fun things lately to get acquainted with one another… we’ve taken to cooking dinners, playing midnight soccer, and drawing lots of posters to hang on the walls. One afternoon I brought out the henna that I had sent from India and we all gave each other tattoos, which was fun. One of the new kids is from Pakistan, and he recently broke his fast for Ramadan, so we had a celebration for him too.

Classes have been great so far; I had signed up for a lot of econ classes, but decided that a few of them weren’t what I really was yearning for after such an intense study abroad experience. Now I am signed up for something completely different: mixed media drawing and photography! Though I am delighted to be expanding my horizons into the arts more, I admit I haven’t had many academic experiences in the arts, which makes me a bit nervous (but in a good way).

One of the biggest challenges at the moment is that we’re entering into the season of job applications! The Center for Career Development (CCD) is helping all of us devise our search strategies, select potential places to apply, and review our resumes and cover letters. With that season approaching rapidly, I think back to what it was like applying to colleges and it feels very much the same. I’ve got to come up with a whole list of places to look at and apply to and then decide where will be the best place to go for the next few years. I thought it would be harder to begin my search from here since I’m not planning on following a very traditional path—I would like to go into something related to organic agriculture and re-designing local food systems—but instead I’ve felt incredibly supported by everyone here at Babson. That’s one of the great things about being at an entrepreneurial school: everyone has such varied interests, and yet we have this mechanism of business to tie them all together so that we can all succeed in doing what we each want to do. For now, I am filled to the brim with the excitement and anticipation for everything that is to come, and feel so grateful to have all sorts of wonderful people connecting me to so many resources and opportunities.

Thanks so much for reading! I hope you have a fantastic week!!

Warmly,

Lauryn
