Dirt and Fun in the Sun of El Salvador

Today was gloriously bright with sunshine and…dirt. Lots more dirt to fill in the foundation of one of the homes we have been working on. Luckily, that started to level off right about the time the cool of morning did. Later on into the day, we worked right behind the masons, filling in the gaps with cement – almost sewing a seam that builds the house together. At our other house, the interior was completely painted, as was the exterior. The floors were being prepared to have a final coating of cement, and the roof as put on today as well. Seeing the finished product of this house really provides of sense of accomplishment for this trip. We concluded the evening by having dinner with the nuns of the retreat center where we are staying and most of us trying to utter some comprehensible sentences in broken Spanish.

The building up of the houses mirrors the extent of our trip thus far. Just when we thought things could not get better by being on the beach, we meet these wonderful and friendly people who will be living in the homes we build for them. Each day, our talks with them become a little longer, we spend a little more time joking with the masons, and as a group we make an addition to our inside jokes. Hopefully, with the last day of work tomorrow, we have a little more sunshine, bonding, and laughter to look forward to.
