Babson Update on Hurricane Irene

The following message has been sent to all undergraduate students in preparation for the anticipated weather this weekend:

Babson College is actively tracking the course of Hurricane Irene, and making preparations in the event it affects the Greater Boston area. At this time, forecasts have the storm bringing heavy rain and wind into the area from late Saturday, August 27 until Monday, August 29 with a tropical storm forecast to impact Massachusetts at approximately 2am on Monday, August 29. We will continue to monitor the storm and its potential impacts over the course of the next 48-72 hours and make adjustments to our plans as necessary.

I encourage you to assess your own personal situation carefully.  You should use good judgment and check the weather prior to making any plans to travel. Should your travel plans be delayed due to weather, please put your personal safety first and do not travel through unsafe conditions.

First-year, Transfer and Exchange Students

First-year, transfer and exchange student move-in will continue as scheduled on Friday, August 26th. Should your travel plans be delayed due to weather, we will welcome you to campus when you are able to arrive and incorporate you into the orientation schedule immediately.

The orientation schedule will be adjusted as needed on Sunday, August 28th. Plans are in effect to ensure dining operations, facilities, public safety and residence halls will be fully staffed and operational throughout this period.

Returning Students

Given the current forecast, we ask you to be mindful of the weather and not try to beat the storm to get here.  It will be safer next week.  Please put your personal safety first and do not travel under unsafe conditions.  Returning student move-in is scheduled for Tuesday, August 30th.  Based on the current forecast, we will not be adjusting the move-in date for returning students given this would likely result in travel during the peak storm period.  If your travel plans for return on Tuesday, August 30th are delayed due to the storm, you should contact your Class Dean directly about potential class impacts.  We will welcome you back to the residence halls and the community when you are able to travel to campus safely.

If You are Already on Campus

Please take the following steps to prepare for this storm:

· Remove or secure any outdoor belongings.

· Close and lock windows to avoid wind-driven rain affecting interior spaces.

· Contact Public Safety at 781-239-5555 if you need assistance or to make them aware of any damage caused during the storm.

The campus will remain open.  More detailed information about essential campus services and other preparations will be provided prior to the storm.  Please continue to check www.babson.edu and your email for updates.
