Inspiration for Business / How the Idea Began
In 2007, as I was pursuing my MBA in the one-year program, I was training with Eric Cressey at a strength & conditioning facility in Waltham, MA where he was employed as a strength coach in an independent contractor role. We both felt strongly that the business could be dramatically improved by modifying their business model and training format, and eventually made the decision to open our own operation. Our initial intention was to train a blend of the general fitness population and athletes, but we eventually identified an opportunity to target the baseball-development niche, and have since become the leader in that field. Presently, 85% of our clients are baseball players, including 100+ MLB-affiliated athletes and 10 current “big leaguers”.

CresseyFavorite Thing About the Business
I wake up excited to go to work every day. When each April roles around, our athletes return to the playing fields and we have the opportunity to see the “fruits of our labor”. We regularly attend high school games, visit collegiate contests, and see our higher-profile athletes while visiting Fenway Park for Red Sox games.

Worst Thing About the Business
While I can’t say that I have something in mind that would qualify as “worst thing about the business”, I can tell you what our biggest mistake has been… If we could go back in time, we would have never put my business partner Eric’s name on the business. We learned the hard way that doing so would result in the majority of our new clients walking through the door expecting to work exclusively with him. The reality is that we have an exceptionally talented and qualified staff, but Eric is the only one with his name on the logo. I wish they had built that lesson into the 1999 Foundations of Management and Entrepreneurship (FME) curriculum!

Most Recent Business Accomplishment
In our case, business accomplishments often come in the form of accomplishments by our athletes. In early March we had the chance to attend the World Baseball Classic in Miami and see two of our long-term clients play for Team USA. Both Tim Collins (Kansas City Royals) and Steve Cishek (Miami Marlins) have been CP athletes since before making the jump to the major leagues, and we were extremely proud to see them selected to represent our country.
