FirstGens – Helping our students succeed
First Generation college students are starting to capture more attention of College Administrations across the country. Here at Babson, we recognize the importance of this unique cohort and the challenges that first-generation college students often face in navigating the academic, social, and financial nuances of college life, while celebrating the unique experiences that first-generation college students bring to the Babson campus.
We define “FirstGen” technically as a student whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have not completed a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university. This means that even if your parents have a technical degree, associate’s degree, or some college experience, you can still participate in all of our activities and utilize the resources we have for first-generation college students.
During Fall Orientation, we had a great family session where parents learned about the busy lives of students and understood how to support their student even though they may not have attended college themselves. This was followed by a session called #TrendingCollege where a small group of students gathered and had great conversations about their anticipations as the semester starts.
