Updates from Shanghai

Post by Nicole Carli & Jasmaer Sandhu

Our first full week in Shanghai was packed with exploration, bonding, classes, and company visits. As we delved into the culture of Shanghai, we quickly noticed the contrast with what we had seen in Beijing. Moving from the political capital to the financial capital we’ve seen a larger international influence, and, lucky for us, a more widespread use of English. Sunday evening we spent an hour cruising down the Huangpu River, and enjoyed the amazing view of the Bund and Pudong.

During our week we visited four businesses:

  1. M on the Bund, a famous restaurant on the Bund
  2. Huber + Suhner
  3. AmCham – the American Chamber of Commerce
  4. Positec Power Tools

We were lucky enough to visit with three Babson alums who shared with us their experiences of living and working in Shanghai, and gave us valuable insights on starting a businesses in China. Board of Trustees Member Fred Kiang ’70, M’75 and “Dr. Dr. Dr.” Sun of the Global Advisory Board welcomed us to an amazing dinner in downtown Shanghai. Fred shared with us some amazing stories about his time at “Babo”, what he envisions for the school, and how his Babson education has helped him grow Sunrise Duty Free Ltd. into the successful multi-national business that it is.
