My Summer at HBO

Julian Addy:

Interning at industry giant HBO, has truly been a blessing. Besides being surrounded by some of the most creative people that I’ve ever meet, I have gained a myriad of invaluable information. During my 10 weeks at HBO, I interned in the Marketing Operations group within the Enterprises department, which is a branch of HBO International that is responsible for leasing, delivering and providing promotional material to clients overseas. Since the first day I noticed that the whole building was electrified with energy and enthusiasm. The HBO intern program had a weekly speaker series, where Executives from different departments in HBO New York and LA come to speak about what they do and answer personal and career related questions. One of the most interesting quotes I heard during the speaker series is, “Passion comes before the idea,” which resonated with me because it put into perspective the right way to choose a career or entrepreneurial venture. In a conversation with one of my co-workers, she reminded me that although it is important to set goals for oneself, one can’t plan their lives out because it is the moments when we deviate that we find out what we truly love. Similarly, my supervisor Aunree J. Houston asked me to go around and interview the different people that worked in our group. From these interviews I realized the importance of holding on to your dreams, and that although you may not be where you would like to be in your life, it doesn’t mean that you can’t get there.
