A Picture’s Worth A Thousand Words

Victoria Squire:

In my view you cannot claim to have seen something until you have photographed it. – Emile Zola

I take the same view as Emile Zola, as he states in his quote above. Capturing an object on film is an unreal experience. You can capture almost any moment possible and have it not only as a mental image, but physically as well. As a photographer, you can see the world however you want to. Through the lens the world is yours. Photography has a different meaning to everyone. For some it is a passion, others an escape. There are those who wish to hide behind the camera, and those who use the camera has a tool to plunge themselves into the starlight. It can be relaxing, but also stressful. Others just use photography has a hobby, but for some it is a monetary means to survive.

I was first truly introduced to the art of photography in high school. I became an avid member in the photography club and soon held leadership positions in the club for the next three years, including President. One very meaningful project to me was my Adelante Hispanic Achievers Photography Workshop that I created. I raised money through bake sales along with my other club members to buy digital cameras for Hispanic middle school students that had never been given the opportunity to experience photography. We taught the students how to use the cameras and walked around campus with them taking pictures. I printed the photographs they took and they were absolutely beautiful; the students had amazing talent. I then matted the pictures and set up a display in the school for all to see. The children were so proud of their work and unbelievably happy. Allowing others the opportunity to enjoy the amazing experience of photography was definitely satisfying and I want everyone to know such a feeling.

If you are interested in photography but are unsure how to get started, there are so many resources that you can use to begin. One excellent resource is looking at photography blogs on the internet. Learning through others is such a great way to excel in a certain area or subject you are interested in. This way you can become creative and innovative as well and find something that can fit you own unique style and personality. One blog I really like is http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/ . Everyone should go out and explore all the different possibilities of photography that exist in our world. Remember, you cannot claim to have seen something until you have photographed it.
