Welcome back from a long weekend.  Hopefully everyone has had a nice President’s Day/Darwin’s Birthday/Valentine’s Day weekend.

I am going to choose to focus on the latter of these celebrations for a few minutes: Valentine’s Day.  Depending on your relationship status, most people either love or hate Valentine’s day.  But no matter where you sit on this issue, you can’t help but have a fondness for that adorable little creature, Cupid, that flies  around all buck-naked joining together two forlorn souls.  

In short, Cupid is a matchmaker:  a shot from one of his arrows inflicted wounds that inspired that “je ne sais quoi” that  joins together two people who may have not previously encountered one another.  But Cupid is a legend, and it’s going to take more than a legend to play matchmaker for you in your job search. That’s why, there are cover letters!

A cover letter works kind of like cupid’s arrow:  It bridges the gap between your “shy” resume and the “eager” employer and matches your skill set  (on your resume) to the requirements of the position (in the job description).  A single great cover letter can land you an interview, and maybe a job.  A really bad cover letter can ruin your chances at a company, sometimes forever.   I’ve heard stories of employers who have received cover letters that were SO bad they shared them with colleagues as the butt of jokes for years.  Do you want your job application to end up in that pile?
